Group calls on Democratic members of the U.S. Senate to continue to push forward on voting rights legislation despite Republican obstructionism
ATLANTA — Today, Fair Fight Action, the national voting rights group founded by Stacey Abrams, released a statement denouncing Republicans in the U.S. Senate for voting to deny debate on the Freedom to Vote Act. The group also called on Democratic Senators to continue to push federal voting rights legislation—including the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act—forward in the face of Republican obstructionism.
Democrats in the Senate have worked tirelessly to negotiate a bill that meets the needs of American voters by protecting the freedom to vote and safeguarding our elections from sabotage. Yet efforts to advance this critical legislation face ongoing obstruction from Republican Senators who remain unified in their efforts to thwart the will of the people and deny debate on a bill supported by a majority of Americans.
Fair Fight Action CEO Lauren Groh-Wargo issued the following statement:
“Voters from across party lines have been clear: Senators must take immediate action to set national standards for voting access for every eligible American, regardless of zip code. Today’s vote is not the first time Senate Republicans have demonstrated their complete unwillingness to work with Democrats to protect the freedom to vote, and today they again prevented the Senate from even debating this bill on the floor. The Senate must be restored and the freedom to vote must be protected. Together, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will ensure all eligible Americans can cast our ballots freely, safely, and equally. With the redistricting already underway, the time has never been more urgent for Senators to take bold action and do whatever is necessary to pass these two bills.”
