Brian Kemp Ally and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger Subpoenaed Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Ancestral Congregation, Other Churches Despite No Involvement in Curling Case
ATLANTA — Today, Fair Fight CEO Lauren Groh-Wargo responded to Brian Kemp ally and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s subpoena of Ebenezer Baptist Church and numerous other Georgia congregations in Curling v. Raffensperger.
“While we acknowledge that the issuance of subpoenas is a routine occurrence in lawsuits, including our own, the fact that religious institutions were asked for records in this case is suspect, because the congregations have nothing to do with the Curling case,” said Groh-Wargo. “Ebenezer Baptist Church, in particular, is a sacred and historic symbol of the Civil Rights Movement, a point that seems to be lost on those defending voter suppression in Georgia. Secretary of State Raffensperger should immediately explain to Georgians why he took this unusual action.”
Churches receiving subpoenas from Raffensperger include: Ebenezer, Baconton Missionary Baptist Church, The Sixth Episcopal District, and Virginia-Highland Church. The subpoenas can be viewed here.
