ATLANTA — Today, a coalition of voting rights and progressive organizations issued a joint statement responding to Georgia Republicans’ proposal to make it harder for Georgians to vote by mail. Specifically, state Republicans in the General Assembly are proposing a prohibition on government entities sending voters absentee ballot applications. See the language in SB 463 here.
The joint statement and signatories follow:
“Right now Georgia Republicans are trying to pass a law that forbids the Secretary of State, State Election Board, counties, and localities from mailing absentee ballot applications to voters. This is unacceptable.
“Rural counties are currently seeing COVID surging and are bracing for a tough fall. If a county wants to help their community safely participate in elections, this proposed law would prohibit them to decide themselves if they want to send absentee ballot request forms to voters.
“Georgia Republicans need to realize that vote by mail is a tool that can benefit either party and that localities, as well as the state, should maintain as many possible tools in their toolbox to promote vote by mail generally and certainly in the midst of a raging, ongoing health crisis.”
