HELP FIGHT BACK AGAINST VOTER SUPPRESSION.

Last updated: Wednesday, March 10, 2021

The right to vote is under attack in multiple states. Help us lead the charge to protect voting rights!

Everyone, Every State

What do I need to know?
Voting rights are under attack in state legislatures, and federal action is needed. Luckily, Congress is supporting two important bills that would dramatically improve our elections process and protect underserved communities from further attacks: HR 1, the For The People Act, and HR 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. If you live and vote in the state of Georgia, please click here for the latest information.

What do I need to do?
Identify your U.S. House Representative here and ask them to vote YES on HR 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

Identify your U.S. Senators here and tell them to vote YES on S 1, companion bill to HR 1—the For The People Act—which recently passed out of the House of Representatives.

Arizona

What do I need to know?
The Arizona legislature is considering:

  • SB 1068, which will shift significant election authority and oversight power from the Arizona Secretary of State (D) and the Attorney General (R) to the state legislature.
  • SB 1485, which will purge the highly-popular Permanent Early Vote List. Advocates estimate this could purge up to 200,000 voters—including 50,000 Latinx voters.
  • SB 1593, which would shorten the early voting period and discard ballots not postmarked the Thurs BEFORE the election. These are blatant efforts to make it harder for Latinx, Native American, and young people—who are the likeliest to use early vote periods—to make their voices heard.
  • SB 1713, which would force Arizona voters to include personal information on their ballot envelopes, exposing them to unnecessary identity risk and making it harder for people to vote by mail.

What do I need to do?
If you live and vote in Arizona, we need you to tell your legislators and leaders to vote NO on all of these discriminatory bills.

  • Sign the petition telling legislative leadership that these bills are wrong for Arizona
  • Call 877-406-6303 to tell you State House Representative to vote NO on SB 1068, 1485, and 1713
  • Call 877-586-4895 to tell your State Senator to vote NO on SB 1593

Georgia

Georgia now has TWO of the worst voter suppression bills in the nation moving quickly through our legislature: SB 241 and HB 531. These proposals are assaults on democracy, founded on baseless and racist far-right conspiracy theories. These bills constitute one of the worst attacks on voting rights since Reconstruction, and would erect a juggernaut of barricades to voting access. They revive Georgia’s dark history of voter suppression and racism as state policy. It is critical Congress pass HR 1 and HR 4 to protect voters and safeguard our democracy.

Republicans wrote Georgia’s election laws, but they were humiliated on November 3 and January 5, so now they are seeking to silence Georgians, particularly communities of color, who exercised their power to change Georgia.

Each day we get closer to stopping these bills, but we MUST continue applying public pressure and holding bad actors accountable. Below, we have compiled, in one document, all the most up-to-date action items to help us fight these bills and hold voter suppressors accountable.

HB 531
HB 531 has now passed on a party line vote in the Georgia House. Now, it will move to the Senate Ethics Committee. It would restrict dropbox access, add new ID requirements for mail voting, restrict weekend voting, and criminalize volunteers for handing out food and water to voters waiting in 2-8 hour long lines.

Not only are these ID requirements suppressive and unnecessary, but they would also have a disproportionate impact on Black, minority, and rural voters across our state.

HB 531 contains provisions that would pass on serious unfunded mandates to our counties that would raise taxes. An independent analysis by Voting Rights Lab found that HB 531 could incur over $50 million in total new costs statewide.

HB 531 ACTION ITEM(S):
GEORGIANS: Call your county elections office to ask that they oppose HB 531 and the new costs for counties that it would create. You can find your county’s elections office contact information here.

GEORGIANS: Call/Email these Senators to demand they vote NO on HB 531:
Max Burns: (404) 656-7586
max.burns@senate.ga.gov
Dean Burke: (404) 656-0040
dean.burke@senate.ga.gov
Jason Anavitarte: (404) 656-0085

Steve Gooch: (404) 656-9221

Bo Hatchett: (404) 656-7454

Butch Miller: (404) 656-6578

SB 241
SB 241 has now passed the Georgia Senate 29-20. SB 241 would repeal no-excuse vote by mail, implement new ID requirements to vote by mail, add MILLIONS in taxes to cover unfunded mandates to county governments, create a new so-called “voter fraud” tip-line to feed voter prosecutions by the Attorney General, and more. SB 241 is a disastrous bill that amounts to one of the most restrictive voting proposals in the country.

The attacks on vote by mail in Georgia are a direct attack on the voting rights of Georgians of color. State legislators should celebrate high turnout, not play into the hands of conspiracists who stormed the U.S. Capitol.

Call these Georgia legislators and demand they OPPOSE SB 241:
Speaker David Ralston: 404-656-5020
david.ralston@house.ga.gov
Barry Fleming: 404-656-5125

New Hampshire

What do I need to know?
Thanks to your advocacy HB 429, which would have revoked college IDs as a valid form of identification at the polls in addition to requiring that colleges offer in-state tuition to students who vote in NH, was defeated. It’s a great start, and we could use your help to defeat the following bills:

  • HB 86, which would eliminate same-day voter registration and effectively ban out-of-state college students from voting by requiring students who wish to vote in NH to prove they receive in-state tuition.
  • HB 531, which would introduce unconstitutional provisional ballots and target new Americans by requiring extensive citizenship documentation at the polls.
  • HB 554, which similarly tries to intimidate young people by introducing confusing residency requirements.

What do I need to do?
If you live and vote in New Hampshire, sign your name to the New Hampshire Coalition for Voting Rights petition telling the legislature to reject HB 86, 531, 554, and additional anti-voter bills. https://www.nhvotingrights.org/
