New Polling Reveals House-Passed SB 202 Provisions Enormously Unpopular Among Georgia Voters

  • March 25, 2021

ATLANTA — As the Senate prepares to vote on a massive power grab and suppression effort that criminalizes participation in the voting process, new polling released by Fair Fight Action showed Georgia Republicans’ anti-democratic SB 202 that just passed the House on a party-line vote isn’t just a dangerous and reckless attack on basic voting rights, but that its key provisions also lack any semblance of support among Georgia voters.

Across the board, Georgians oppose critical parts of SB 2020:

  • Criminalizing Line Warming: Nearly eight-in-ten Georgians — including more than six-in-ten Republicans — oppose the SB 202 plan to criminalize the handing out of food and water to people standing in line waiting to vote.
  • Transfer Election Authority to State Legislature: Three-quarters of Georgia voters oppose the SB 202 plan to allow the state legislature to take election authority away from local elections officials, counties, and the Secretary of State. Over 70% of Republicans also oppose this plan.
  • Wrong-Precinct Disenfranchisement: Seven-in-ten Georgia voters oppose the SB 202 plan that could throw out the votes of eligible voters who vote at the wrong precinct location. Once again, a majority of Republicans also oppose these efforts to disenfranchise voters.
  • Restricting Absentee Voting: Most Georgia voters also oppose the SB 202 plan to restrict the freedom to vote by absentee ballot. Roughly six-in-ten Georgians oppose efforts to restrict drop boxes and the time that voters can request an absentee ballot.

“Georgia Republicans’ anti-democratic attacks on the right to vote aren’t just wrong and shameful — they’re also extremely unpopular with Georgia voters,” said Fair Fight Action CEO Lauren Groh-Wargo. “Across the board, Georgians overwhelmingly oppose efforts to restrict access to the ballot box and give control of our elections over to partisan politicians in the legislature. Refusing to stand up against this anti-voter access legislation is refusing to stand with the vast majority of Georgians — and it’s time for all political, civic, and business leaders to make their opposition to these dangerous and enormously unpopular proposals clear.”
