New Analysis: Flawed Data Behind Voter Challenges from Far-Right Activists

Atlanta — A new analysis from TargetSmart, a data and analytics firm, reveals far-right election denier activists are using incomplete, unreliable data to challenge thousands of Georgians’ freedom to vote. The data fueling the voter challenges comes from outdated sources that often provide inaccurate information, raising serious concerns about the integrity of their claims.

The mass voter challenges, often based on National Change of Address data and questionable sources like obituaries, business addresses, and phone numbers scraped from Google search results, seem designed to plant seeds of doubt about the 2024 election’s legitimacy. With Georgia already employing aggressive list maintenance protocols — removing over 348,000 voters between October 2023 and September 2024, including over 100,000 voters since the start of 2024 — these mass voter challenges are unnecessary and harmful.

Tomorrow, the MAGA Georgia State Election Board will examine claims that some county election boards are failing to properly investigate mass voter challenges. Their probe adds yet another layer to the doubt being sown ahead of the election by Donald Trump’s MAGA allies.

Janice Johnston, a pro-Trump Election Board member has reignited Trump's debunked 2020 election lies with false claims of missing 2020 ballots, despite official recounts affirming the results. During a May meeting, Johnston falsely suggested over 17,000 ballots were missing in Fulton County, even though the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office confirmed all paper ballots are accounted for. Baseless allegations like Johnston’s are inspiration for last-minute election rule changes that seek to sow doubt about the 2024 election before any votes are cast.

"The data being used by far-right election deniers to challenge Georgians' freedom to vote is based on incomplete and flawed information — bottom line it should not be used to remove voters. It seems clear the Trump campaign and MAGA operation plan to use these faulty claims, just as they did in 2020, to push lies of voter fraud to mobilize their base and undermine the election results,” stated Lauren Groh-Wargo, Fair Fight CEO.

In addition to these flawed challenges, the controversial MAGA Georgia Election Board, controlled by Trump-endorsed members, is engaged in a confirmed conspiracy to change rules on election certification and ballot counting that, per the Georgia Attorney General, likely violate state law. These rules, opposed by Democrats, Republicans, and nonpartisan election officials, add to the growing chaos that Trump’s MAGA allies are sowing around Georgia’s election.

MAGA Election Sabotage Conspiracy: Reports have revealed months of email coordination between Georgia State Election Board member Dr. Janice Johnston, local Georgia election officials who support Trump’s Big Lie, and MAGA election deniers. The email correspondence reveals a secret effort to rewrite Georgia election certification rules. The emails build on other reports that show direct coordination between Election Board members and Georgia Republican Party leaders, Republican National Committee operatives, and Trump-connected election deniers, even some that supported his failed attempts to steal the 2020 election.
