ATLANTA — Fair Fight—the national voting rights organization founded by Stacey Abrams— today released a statement commending U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock’s speech on the Senate floor yesterday. In his remarks, Warnock called on his Senate colleagues to take urgent action on voting rights, which he noted are the “central moral issue confronting Congress in this moment.”
Fair Fight Executive Director Cianti Stewart-Reid issued the following statement:
“This is a decisive moment for our nation and Congress is running out of time to protect the freedom to vote. The attacks on our democracy Senator Warnock spoke about in his remarks aren’t abstract—they’re already happening. Anti-voter politicians want to pick and choose their voters, draw rigged districts, and sabotage free and fair elections. And by neglecting to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, Republican Senators are giving these power-hungry politicians an open invitation to do just that.
In just a few weeks state legislatures will return to session with a new slate of dangerous anti-voter bills. The time to act is now. Voters braved the pandemic to deliver Democrats a Senate majority; these same Senators must not put the draconian views of the Senate’s minority party ahead of the rights of eligible voters across the country. Senators can—and have—acted to deliver for the American people, as they did this week by adjusting the debt ceiling. Protecting our freedom to vote demands the same urgency—we must restore the Senate. Fair Fight Action stands with Senator Warnock and countless activists nationwide in demanding that Senators act now, before the damage to our democracy is cemented for generations to come.”
Just yesterday, nearly 30 Georgia-based voting rights advocates came together to speak out against one of the most dangerous bans on drop boxes our nation has ever seen. The coalition released a joint letter calling on all of Georgia’s political, economic, and civic leaders to work together to combat escalating threats on our democracy and push for passage of federal legislation to protect the freedom to vote.
